What this tool does
Encode UTF-8 text as Base64 or decode Base64 back to UTF-8 text locally. Choose a direction and press Convert. This interface does not upload files or decode arbitrary binary data into downloadable files.
How to use Base64 Encoder/Decoder
- Enter text or Base64. Paste UTF-8 text to encode, or standard Base64 representing UTF-8 text to decode. For example, hello encodes to aGVsbG8=.
- Choose a direction and convert. Select Encode or Decode, then press Convert. Invalid Base64 or bytes that are not valid UTF-8 produce an error.
- Inspect and copy. Check the output before using Copy. Base64 is reversible encoding, not encryption. Do not use it to protect credentials.
How this tool works
The component converts UTF-8 bytes to the Base64 alphabet or reverses that representation locally.
- Engine: Browser Base64 conversion with UTF-8 handling
- Supported input: text, Base64-encoded UTF-8 text
- Output: Base64, decoded UTF-8 text
Worked example
Input: hello
Output: aGVsbG8=
Limits, edge cases, and troubleshooting
Use it for data URIs, API test values, and inspecting small payloads. Never treat Base64 as protection for secrets.
- Large files expand by about one third and consume browser memory.
- Base64 is encoding, not encryption; invalid padding or alphabet characters cause decoding errors.
When to use another workflow
Use command-line utilities or streaming code for large files, pipelines, checksums, encryption, or repeatable automation.

Frequently asked questions
Can this convert image or audio files?
No. This workspace handles text only. Use Image to Base64 for supported image files; arbitrary binary output needs a different tool.
Why does Base64 grow the input?
Every three bytes become four Base64 characters, with padding when needed. This is about one-third overhead for longer inputs and can be higher for very short strings.
Is information sent to a server?
Tool inputs are processed in this browser. This product does not use analytics or send your input to an external API. Clicking an external website link still visits that website.
