Required Marks Calculator

Find the score needed on remaining work to reach a target overall percentage.

Use the average percentage for completed work and the weight of one remaining assessment (or a combined remaining component). Weights use percentages of the overall grade.

Average of the completed portion, not points already contributed to the final grade.

0 to 100. Completed work has the remaining weight.

Leave blank for a required percentage only.

What this tool does

Find the score needed on remaining work to reach a target overall percentage. Enter your own assessment details and inspect the calculation behind the result.

How to use Required Marks Calculator

  1. Enter the completed average. Use the percentage average on completed work, the remaining assessment weight and your desired overall percentage.
  2. Optionally enter exam marks. Supply the assessment maximum and allowed increment for a minimum attainable mark. For example, choose 1 for whole marks or 0.5 for half marks.
  3. Review feasibility and formula. Inspect the weighted formula and upward rounding. Requirements above 100% and increments beyond the maximum are flagged as impossible.

How this tool works

With remaining fraction w = weight / 100, required percentage = (target − completed average × (1 − w)) / w. Non-positive requirements become zero; results over 100% are impossible. Minimum marks = ceil(raw marks / increment) × increment. Zero remaining weight is handled separately.

  • Engine: Weighted-average algebra with rational arithmetic for upward mark increments
  • Supported input: completed-work average, remaining weight and target percentages from 0 to 100, optional positive assessment maximum and mark increment
  • Output: required percentage or minimum marks, feasibility and formula

Worked example

Input: Completed average 65%, remaining weight 40%, target 70%, exam out of 80, whole marks

Output: (70 − 65 × 0.6) / 0.4 = 77.5%; 77.5% of 80 = 62 marks, producing 70% overall.

Limits, edge cases, and troubleshooting

Plan a remaining exam using the completed-work average rather than mistaking already-weighted contribution points for that average.

  • An assessment is modeled as one remaining component.
  • Maximum marks and increments must be positive, finite and within supported arithmetic bounds.
  • Separate assessment pass marks, moderation and extra credit are not modeled.
  • Allowed scores are multiples of the chosen increment from zero; choose the increment that matches your assessment.

Verification

Implementation checked on 2026-09-16. Unit tests and local browser checks covered 62/80 required marks, upward rounding from 59.25 to 60/75 (70.4% overall), zero and full remaining weight and impossible targets. Exact increment boundaries and narrow layouts were checked.

Supported inputs and limits

Frequently asked questions

What if the remaining assessment has no weight?

At 0% remaining weight the completed average is final: the target is either already secured or impossible. No division by zero is attempted.

Does this enforce my exam pass rules?

No. It calculates a weighted overall target from your inputs. Separate pass marks, extra credit, moderation and institutional requirements must be checked independently.
