Alt Text Checker

Inspect image alt attributes in pasted HTML.

WCAG Compliance: WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content, Level A) requires all<img> elements to have meaningful alternative text. Decorative images should use either alt="" withrole="presentation" oraria-hidden="true".

What this tool does

Inspect image alt attributes in pasted HTML. A local regular expression finds img tags in the supplied string and reads quoted or unquoted attributes. Missing, empty and supplied alt values are reported separately, with presentation/hidden markers considered. The checker sees only the markup you pasted and does not parse or fetch a live page.

How to use Alt Text Checker

  1. Prepare the input. Paste the HTML containing image tags.
  2. Run or configure the tool. Select Check Images.
  3. Check and use the output. Review missing/empty values in their page context and write useful descriptions where needed.

Worked example

Input: <img src="a.png" alt="QA scene"><img src="b.png">

Output: The first image has supplied alt “QA scene”; the second has Missing alt.

Limits, assumptions and interpretation

It cannot determine whether a description accurately conveys the image or its purpose.

  • Empty alt can be appropriate for a decorative image; the warning needs contextual judgment.
  • Regular-expression inspection can misread complex or malformed markup. CSS backgrounds, unpasted lazy markup and accessibility tree behavior are outside this inspection.
  • This is not an accessibility certification or a visual image-description generator.
