Mute a clip's audio, or replace it with a different track

Muting removes sound from the export without touching the picture. You can mute an entire track at once — which is what "mute the whole video" really means on a multi-track timeline — or mute a single clip.

Open the editor The editor needs a desktop Chrome or Edge browser.

How it works in the editor

  1. Import the video

Add the clip to a video track. Its audio travels with it.

  2. Mute the track

Use the track's mute control to silence everything on that track. The icon shows the state so you can see at a glance what is muted.

  3. Or mute one clip

Select a single clip and mute it instead, leaving the rest of the track audible.

  4. Check the export is silent

Play the timeline. The muted track produces no sound in the preview, and the export uses exactly the same state.

  5. Export

Export the MP4. If nothing on the timeline has audio, the file is written without an audio track at all.

Questions

Does muting delete the audio from my file?

No. The mute is part of the project. Your imported file is unchanged, and you can un-mute at any time.

Can I mute only part of a video?

Yes. Split the clip at the boundaries of the section you want silent, then mute only that clip.

Can I replace the audio instead?

Yes. Mute the original track and add an audio or video file to another track; the export mixes whatever is unmuted.
